If someone asked me to sum up my love of the Mere and surronding areas I visit upon most days, I couldn't so enjoy the pictures instead.

Let me firstly wish you a Happy New Year to you all, and I would like to dedicate this blog to my late Nan whose birthday it would have been today.

The sun was shining and the temperature mild, we could almost be fooled into thinking that it was spring.

I saw quite a number of Robins today, on various routes of my walk. I saw 3 Swans fly over, which I don't see very often. I chose to return my walk along the old railway line which I approached via the canal via Clayhanger. I took it slow and took all the sights and scents of the vegetation. I was aiming to photograph  Long Tailed Tits as these little birds fascinate me as the fly past, talmenting me to catch them, they are to flighty to say the least. Just as you aim and shoot they take flight. I  was lucky to get a shot, but its not great.

Approaching the bridge the back of One stop depot, where the horses are fed I sat and stopped to watch the Fieldfare, and their were several Robins here also. I looked down and saw  a red furry head scurrying through the leaves, I first thought it can't be a Red Squirrel as we don't have them around here, then a long red body followed. It had a sniff round then rushed under the bushes. Wow.DSCN7715.JPG

I didn't get to see its tail properly so I can not say if it was a Weasel or a Stoat,. The tail of the Stoat as a black tip, which can be distinguished from the Weasel as they have a shorter tail with no black tip. It was amazing as I wasn't exspecting to see that, it was a case of the right place, right time.

Walking past he Lake, the usual suspects were out and about. Not you Ray if you are reading this. I hope Zeth kept up with you during the rest of your walk.(Nice to put a face to the name)

Gooseanders, Wigeon, Tufted Ducks, Gulls of several varieties, Grebes and Coots were all cleary visible.

The wind started to pick up and the clouds were moving fast making lovely formations through the last of the suns rays. What a lovely end to the walk.

Theres nothing better to warm the heart, than a bowl of homemade fresh soup......   Till next time x

I hope everybody had a great Christmas.

Today I ventured out into the big wide world and headed for Blackbrook Zoo near Ashbourne, and only six miles away from Alton Towers.

As a special price from November to the 31st January it is only £1.99 for all classes to enter, so its an ideal time to go.

It is alike to Slimbridge with an amount of wetland and wilfdowl birds, Cranes, Ibis and Flamingos. A  Penguin enclosure  made viewing a pleasure with underwater windows and top of water viewing also.

It made for a lovely day out, if you do get the chance to go, GO!

I am sorry its been quiet here, but there hasn't been anyhting to report on my walks. I did go to Stratford Upon Avon on Saturday 26th November to visit one of my favourite tourist attractions.

Stratford upon Avon plays host to the UK's largest tropical butterfly house. I could spend a whole day in there watching the different species fluttering past, and is ideal for photo oppurtunities.

If your lucky enough and tasty they will land on you. I had one nearly land on my nose. I get such a buzz  from the butterflies, the plus side also is on a cold day out, its very warm in the tropical house.

Also on show to the public is the caterpillar room, where cocoons and pupae hang

around on plants and in cases. The whole cycle is visable.

link all the information on this amazing attraction can be found on their website click the link. If you have never been before, you are missing out.

link here are a collection of photos that I  took on that day.

While the weather is still fine I shall remain walking the areas I like in the mornings, and it is a good job that I did this today has I would of missed a spectacular rarity.

It was pretty quiet over the Mere and the fields leading up to Grange Farm, and the Copse to, then it happened. I always look in the field next to the Copse and between the Seven Trent  as I often see the deer in there, but today I was met with three stags in the open field rutting. One deer watched as the two others clashed antlers.

As is the norm I carry my camera everywhere, apart from the day I went to meet David Tennant and forgot it - but thats another story, so I grabbed it out  the case and started to video, why on this usually quite lane did hundreds of cars go past so I can't hear the deer bellow. Hot air arose from their mouths as they exhaled and chased each other. I spent 15 mins just watching them in awe, from a distance with a fence and hedge between us as to make myself safe as the Stags can be unpredictable in the rutting period.

link Here is a link to the set of photos and two videos  I have put upon Flickr of the rut.

On my way back through the Copse as I was hunting Fungus, as I like to photograph that to. I have given up looking on the floor for it now as more of it seems to be high up on dead silver birch trees, and different species to. I heard a strange noise, I presumed it was a bird so looked towards the sound and it was a squirrel. I was amazed as I had never heard a squirrel make a noise before. I preusume he was looking for a mate.

Today as been great and as made up for the few weeks that nothing as happened to blog about.
